Greta Gerwig’s ‘Barbie’ Beats ‘The Dark Knight’ As Warner Bros.’ Top Box Office Film

Barbie, directed by Greta Gerwig, is the highest-grossing film of domestic release from Warner Bros. It has made $537.4 million at the US box office, according to CNN Business. The source noted that the film has surpassed Warner Bros.’s previous highest-grossing film, which was the Batman film The Dark Knight, which had made $536 million.

Warner Bros. Discovery announced on Wednesday that the film has hit over $1.2 billion globally. Just two weeks ago, the film hit $1 billion. Paul Dergarabedian, a media analyst, told CNN that only around 50 films have ever hit the $1 billion mark (adjusted for inflation). Additionally, this makes Gerwig the highest-grossing women director in history.

Opening weekend, Barbie made $155 million. Even weeks after its initial release, the film brought in over $30 million this past weekend. CNN Business notes a part of the success of Barbie comes from the “pop culture phenomenon” known as ‘Barbenheimer’, where audiences would see both Barbie and Oppenheimer on the same day, due to the same release dates of both films.

The source also claims that Barbie is on track to surpass The Super Mario Bros. Movie, which was also released this year in April. The movie has made almost $575 million at the US box office.
