Actress Greta Gerwig is set to direct the Sacramento-set drama Lady Bird based on her own script for IAC Films and producer Scott Rudin (No Country For Old Men), according to Deadline. The limited plot information available reveals that the story will focus on a young woman’s last year spent living in Sacramento. Gerwig likely drew from a lot of personal experience for the story as California’s capitol was her own childhood home.
Gerwig has had a major creative hand in several of her past films – she co-wrote the Golden Globe-nominated Frances Ha, as well as the upcoming Mistress America alongside filmmaker Noah Baumbach. She also co-wrote and co-directed the 2008 mumblecore drama Nights and Weekends with indie director Joe Swanberg (Drinking Buddies). This time around, she is going it alone creatively, and also won’t be playing any of her characters onscreen.
The debut filmmaker will have a lot of support behind her first solo endeavor. She and Rudin already have a working relationship after he produced Frances Ha and her other Baumbach film Greenberg. Some of IAC Films most recent releases have been Baumbach’s While We’re Young as well as Chris Rock’s Top Five .
Leading up to Lady Bird, Gerwig will be starring with Ethan Hawke (Boyhood) and Julianne Moore (Still Alice) in Maggie’s Plan which is set to premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival. She is also set to appear with Elle Fanning (Maleficent) and Annette Bening (The Kids Are Alright) in 20th Century Women. She can be seen at the indie cinema this weekend in Mistress America.
