The production of Barbie from Warner Bros. just got a whole lot more exciting. Barbie, the widely awaited big-screen adaptation of the iconic Mattel doll, starring Margot Robbie, officially has a director in Oscar-nominated filmmaker and actor Greta Gerwig.
While Gerwig has been a part of the project since 2019 to co-write the script with Noah Baumbach, there have been rumors that Gerwig wanted to do more for the project, but nothing has been confirmed until now.
In an interview with British Vogue earlier this month, Robbie hinted that Gerwig would be the director. The report was confirmed by Variety.
“But with that come a lot of exciting ways to attack it,” Robbie told the publication. “People generally hear ‘Barbie’ and think, ‘I know what that movie is going to be,’ and then they hear that Greta Gerwig is writing and directing it, and they’re like,’ Oh, well, maybe I don’t…’”
Given Gerwig’s success with 2017’s Lady Bird and 2019’s Little Women, it wouldn’t be so surprising that she makes Barbie a success too.
The plot is being kept under lock and key, but as for filming, that will be put on hold until early 2022 at Warner Bros. Leavesden Studios in London. Gerwig and Baumbach are now filming White Noise that stars Gerwig, and until that movie is finished, they can’t work on Barbie.
There is a plan that Barbie will be released in theaters in 2023.
