Greta Gerwig continues on the path of an extraordinary directorial career. After earning critical and fan acclaim all over the world with Lady Bird, a picture that took her all the way to the Academy Awards (where Gerwig was nominated for Best Picture and Best Director,) the 34-year-old actress-turned-director might be settling into her next project.
Little Women is a novel written by Louisa May Alcott and published in 1868. The work became “the paradigmatic text for young women of the era and one in which family literary culture is prominently featured,” as noted by author Barbara Sicherman.
Gerwig, whose interest in family values, religion and coming-of-age stories of young women was firmly established in Lady Bird, would remain in a comfortable position if she proceeds with the project. Besides the highly appraised novel, a cast of potential A-list actors is being organized that would help the young director achieve her vision for the book (which Gerwig would also adapt herself.)
Currently, Oscar winners Meryl Streep and Emma Stone, and Oscar nominees Timothée Chalamet and Saoirse Ronan are in talks. The former two would be reuniting with Gerwig from Lady Bird. Ronan, whose acclaim is no lesser than that of the picture itself, truly has developed a beautiful language with the director, so the possibility of the pair heading into a new film is exciting.
Amy “All About Spiders” Pascal is producing for Sony. For Pascal, the past few years have been monumental at setting up the stage for her to become one of the more prominent Hollywood producers. With a bomb cast and a passionate, confident director, who, I’d assume, is still riding off of the high of being recognized by some of the world leading directors, actors, and writers, the film, if it actually happens, is a sure-to-be success.
