Gerard Butler has already committed to Gods of Egypt and London Is Falling, the sequel to last year’s Olympus Has Fallen. According to The Hollywood Reporter, he might also commit to star as the villain in remake of Kathryn Bigelow’s 1991 film Point Break. It is unknown how this development will affect his availability for the possible Kane & Lynch adaptation. The Point Break remake will be written by Kurt Wimmer and directed by Ericson Core.
Point Break (1991) starred Keanu Reeves an FBI agent who goes undercover in the Southern California surfing scene in order to get close to a gang leader, played by Patrick Swayze, behind a string of robberies. It’s a byline that sounds eerily similar to the original The Fast and the Furious, and it’s hard to believe Alcon Entertainment and Warner Bros, the companies which have been shepherding the remake since it was announced more than two years ago, aren’t hoping for similar franchise potential in choosing to remake a film barely twenty years old. The new version will feature a similar plot with Gerard Butler playing the gang leader, although this time the gang are extreme sports enthusiasts in addition to surfing. Surfing would likely remain at the forefront of a faithful remake considering that the title, Point Break, is a surfing term. At this time, no actor or short list has been announced to portray the FBI agent.
Warner Bros. and Alcon Entertainment have been planning a remake of Point Break at least as far back as 2011. Interestingly, Alcon obtained movie rights as well as gaming rights and television rights, which reinforces the notion that they may have more in mind than a single movie. No release date has been announced.
