Attention all Hollywood directors, if you want Oscar winning actor George Clooney to star in your film, you better not be jerk. In a recent interview with the New York Times to promote his new sci-fi drama on Netflix, The Midnight Sky, Clooney talked about his process of selecting filmmakers and collaborators that he wants to work with.
“I’ve seen some films where I go, “Oh, that’s really interesting, smart filmmaking,’ but you also have to get to know directors a little bit,” Clooney Said. “I have to know that they love what they do and they aren’t [jerks].”
It’s been reported numerous times that Clooney has experienced friction with a few directors in the past, specifically with David O. Russell on the set of Three Kings. “I don’t want people that are yelling and screaming and are angry at the world,” Clooney continued. “Once, I was on a directors’ round table with a director who was like: ‘I break actors down. I’ll do 40 takes until they have nothing.’ I looked at him as an actor, and I was like, ‘Man, I’m never going to work with you.’”
It’s unclear exactly who Clooney is referencing here, but some have speculated that he may be referring to David Fincher, who’s known for his meticulous and strict direction. Fincher recently directed the Netflix film Mank, which is currently getting lot of Oscar buzz, but it seems like Clooney would rather work with Joel Schumacher and star in another Batman & Robin than work with a director like Fincher.
“Joel would use a megaphone to direct, and he would always go, ‘OK, George, remember: Your parents are dead, you have nothing to live for, and action!’ The movie wasn’t very good, but who cares? He was a dear, sweet guy, and I think he had a very good life in general.”
Clooney’s newest film, The Midnight Sky is currently available to watch on Netflix.
