A writer from the show Game of Thrones has been pegged by 20th Century Fox to write a script for their adaptation of the trading card game Magic: The Gathering. No, it’s not George R. R. Martin. It’s Bryan Cogman, who has also served as a producer and story editor on the show.
In case your curious about Mr. Cogman’s credentials, he has sole writing credit on: “Cripples, Bastards, and Broken Things” (Season 1, Episode 4), “What Is Dead May Never Die” (Season 2, Episode 3), “Kissed by Fire” (Season 3, Episode 4), “Oathkeeper” (Season 4, Episode 4), and “The Laws of Gods and Men” (Season 4, Episode 6) – so judge his abilities accordingly.
According to an exclusive from Deadline, the “potential franchise movie” will be produced by Hasbro (of Transformers fame) and Simon Kinberg (of X-Men: Days of Future Past fame). No director or cast has been announced.
Magic:The Gathering is a competitive card game between two or more players. The general premise is the players are wizards locked in battle who summon creatures, spells, weapons, land masses, and other things (represented by the cards) to aid them. Each card has a short description of the monster, person, etc. it represents, and some cards even reference each other, thus giving the “world” of Magic a sense of depth and continuity. On top of that, there have been several spin-offs from the core game such as books and video games (much like another fantasy game series being adapted to film).
All in all, Cogman has plenty to work with if he’s searching for story ideas.
