‘Frozen 2’ and ‘Knives Out’ Lead Thanksgiving Weekend Box Office

After Frozen 2 swept away multiple records in its opening weekend, the animated sequel is still going strong and continuing to break records for the Thanksgiving holiday box office. The previous record holder for highest earnings over this weekend was The Hunger Games: Catching Fire in 2013, also sequel to a successful franchise. As of Sunday, the film has now officially broken the record with total earnings of $123.7 million over the five day holiday weekend. Now its global total is more than $738 million worldwide.

The other big name release of this week, Knives Out, also performed ahead of expectations. Directed by The Last Jedi director Rian Johnson, the film had quite the star studded roster with cast members including Daniel Craig, Chris Evans, Jamie Lee Curtis, and Michael Shannon. Since its release on Wednesday, the film opened on target at $41.7 million. For a mid-range budget film going up against a Disney franchise piece, this is better than expected and marks a win for original concept films.

Another original film out this week that has gone above and beyond at the box office is indie film Queen & Slim. The film, directed by Melina Matsoukas and written by Lena Waithe, had a five day opening of about $15 million. Starring Daniel Kaluuya and Jodie Turner-Smith, the film is a marker of success for independent and diverse films, both at the box office and with critics.
