Sony Pictures Classics finalized its plans for the release of upcoming drama, Freud’s Last Session. Based on the play from Mark St. Germain, the film is set to star Anthony Hopkins and Matthew Goode.
Directed by Matt Brown, the film depicts the final days of Sigmund Freud’s life, with the world on the cusp of World War II. As his death draws near, Freud calls upon the author C.S. Lewis, to join him in a debate over the existence of God.
Now set for a release of December 22nd in New York and L.A., with an expansion slated for January, Freud’s Last Session is opening against A24’s The Iron Claw, Searchlight’s All Of Us Strangers, MGM’s American Fiction, and Universal/Illumination’s animated feature Migration.
SPC is set to distribute the film after finding success on their last venture with Hopkins. SPC distributed the 2021 film The Father, which landed Hopkins his second Academy Award, as well garnering a massive amount of fanfare.
“We are so excited to have Sony Pictures Classics on board our film,” Brown had to say, according to Deadline. “They have a long history of supporting independent filmmakers’ visions and offering audiences dynamic stories told from a global perspective. I am thrilled to be working with them on Freud’s Last Session from such an early stage.”
