When it comes to Christmas films, one of the most well recognized and ironic entries associated with the holiday is the 1971 horror film, Black Christmas. Directed by A Christmas Story director, Bob Clark, Black Christmas is famous for being one of the first films in the slasher genre, as well as a dark take on a rather joyful holiday. Now Blumhouse Productions will give the film a modern update, with a remake directed by newcomer Sophia Takal being set for this holiday season. The first official trailer was just released.
As a local college is shutting down for the holidays, students- specifically Riley Stone (Imogen Poots) and her Mu Kappa Epsilon sisters- are already focused on preparing their long break by creating various parties. Things take a dark turn, however, as a masked killer begins murdering sorority women around the area. Stone and her friends investigate these murders and find out that there might be more to this killer than on the surface. They question the men in the town they trust, from boyfriends to professors, as the sorority plans to take down a possible cult the killer represents, ensuring that one on gets hurt on this joyous Christmas season.
This is not the first time Black Christmas has been remade, as it received a remake in 2006 in the vein of many other horror remakes at the time. The 2006 film was met with poor reception, citing it more as a generic horror film from that era. This new remake seems be taking a more modern route, with Takal (Always Shine) in the directing chair and a script written by her and Widower writer April Wolfe.
The trailer showcases a more female empowering version of the tale, with characters taking more action against the killer. It feels very similar to the 2018 reboot of Halloween, as we see characters fighting back as opposed to being the typical damsel in distress role from the 70s and 80s.
