Ai Weiwei is a contemporary artist and filmmaker known for his documentaries that focus on a variety of different topics, but many if not all of his films display his activism. He has focused quite a few films on his home country of China, and has recently been focusing his documentaries in other countries, including Mongolia and Japan. His newest film, Human Flow, is focusing on the refugee crisis and the difficulties that many of the refugees face when trying to escape their excruciatingly frightening, original homes, as seen in this trailer:
The film was filmed over one year and across 23 different countries, including Greece, France, Germany, Afghanistan, Israel, Iraq, Mexico, Bangladesh, Kenya, and Turkey. It is definitely Weiwei’s most ambitious film, and it will be interesting to see where he will take it. The cinematography already looks quite stunning and beautiful, yet there is a sense of urgency that the film is trying to help people understand.
The film is being distributed by Amazon Studios, with Weiwei, Chin-chin Yap, and Heino Deckert as the producers and Andy Cohen, Jeff Skoll, Diane Weyermann as executive producers. The film is set to release sometime in fall of 2017, and we look forward to its emotional message.
