The first full trailer for Universal’s upcoming biopic Steve Jobs hit the internet today, and from what can be seen, it will be quite the unvarnished look at the tech titan. Michael Fassbender (12 Years a Slave) toplines as the legendary Apple co-founder, working from screenwriter Aaron Sorkin’s adaptation of Walter Issacson’s biography.
From the trailer, it seems that the film focuses on some watershed moments in Jobs’ career – the early days as a feisty startup company, the 80s, when Jobs broke away from the company he worked so hard to get off the ground, and his triumphant return in the mid 90’s. Along the way, there are fractured relationships, both collegial and personal. Seth Rogen (The Interview) portrays often-frustrated partner Steve Wozniack. Katherine Waterson (Inherent Vice) plays Chrisann Brennan, Jobs’ ex-girlfriend and the mother of their daughter, whom Jobs refused to acknowledge for large chunk of her life. Kate Winslet(Insurgent) rounds out the ensemble as early Jobs confidante and colleague Joanna Hoffman.
The film’s development has been equally as dramatic as Jobs’ history. Originally optioned by Sony, David Fincher (Gone Girl) was set to direct and Christian Bale (Batman Begins) attached to play Jobs. Danny Boyle (Slumdog Millionaire) replaced Fincher in the director’s chair, Fassbender stepped in for Bale, and Universal picked up the film when Sony put it in turnaround.
