Fans Can Finally Get Their First Look At Zach Cregger’s Long Awaited ‘Resident Evil’ Adaptation With First Trailer

The trailer has just dropped for one of the most anticipated horror films of the year. Fans can finally get their first look at Zach Cregger’s highly anticipated Resident Evil adaptation.

The franchise itself first started way back in 1996, with the seminal Resident Evil. Following an elite group of special forces officers investigating an abandoned mansion, Resident Evil would make a huge impact on the landscape of video games. It would define the subgenre of survival/horror, while going on to spawn countless sequels, spinoffs, and other tie-ins. The latest game, Resident Evil Requiem, released earlier this year to massive praise from both critics and longtime fans of the series.

With his previous work on both Weapons and Barbarian, pairing Cregger with Resident Evil seemed a match made in heaven for fans. But, as Hollywood Reporter noted, this marks a big turn in Cregger’s career, who usually makes wholly original projects. This is his first film based on an established franchise, but reports indicate that Cregger made this film so it can be enjoyed by both longtime, diehard fans, as well as newcomers to the series.

Cregger spoke about this with ScreenRant recently, stating that he took great care when crafting the story. He looked at how the games go for a fresh, untold story with certain entries, explaining, “I figure if I am honoring the games, I’m just going to tell another story that feels like playing a game in the world of the game.”

Even in the mere two minutes of footage shown in the trailer, Cregger already promises plenty of the traits that the games have become known for. The main character, played by Austin Abrams, stumbles upon a seemingly empty house, right in the middle of nowhere. As he begins to traverse the property, he has to find objects that can ensure his escape and survival, all while avoiding horrific creatures out of unimaginable nightmares.

Zach Cregger’s Resident Evil hits theaters September 18th. Check out the trailer below.
