Ethan Hawke (The Magnificent Seven) and Amanda Seyfried (Love the Coopers) will star in First Reformed, written and directed by Paul Schrader. The news was confirmed at the Toronto Film Festival, where Schrader was showing his film Dog Eat Dog, a TIFF selection.
First Reformed centers on an ex-military chaplain (Hawke) and his friendship with a grieving widow (Seyfried). Their connection raises suspicions that his church may be involved with unscrupulous corporations, and an investigation ensues.
Christine Vachon and David Hinojosa of Killer Films are producing alongside Gary Hamilton. Brian Beckmann is executive producer.
Hawke, Oscar-nominated four times for both writing and acting, will be seen in theaters later this month in an updated remake of the western The Magnificent Seven. He recently completed shooting Luc Besson’s sci-fi Valerian and City of Thousand Planets, currently in post-production and which is slated for release next year on July 21st. He is currently filming 24 Hours To Live, about an assassin seeking a second chance at life.
Seyfried is currently filming Andrew Niccol’s sci-fi thriller Anon. She has several projects currently in post-production including two comedies – Dito Montiel’s The Clapper and Mark Pellington’s The Last Word – and an Untitled Nash Edgerton Project, whose plot is being kept under wraps.
