Marvel’s new line of superheroes is staying strong on its second weekend and comes ahead of Clifford the Big Red Dog. It is the Eternals’ sophomore box office weekend and the team of intergalactic beings stays on top of its class producing $27.5 million.
The film has now made slightly over $118 million in the US and Canada. The second weekend does see a rather steep 61% decline in sales domestically. In pre-pandemic times this might have been considered a failure for a big Disney production, but considering that less than a dozen of films in 2021 even made it to the $100 benchmark, it is actually not bad at all. Despite receiving the worst rating on Rotten Tomatoes for a Marvel movie ever, the group of god-like superheroes has done very well on the international market, reaching $281.4 million worldwide.
In second place this weekend was Paramount Picture’s family film Clifford the Big Red Dog, with $16.4 million on its debut. The film follows a 12-year-old girl who receives a red puppy as her birthday present, which quickly turns into a giant dog. Ticket sales might not have been as high as anticipated due to its simultaneous release on Paramount+.
Dune came in third place this weekend grossing just about $5.5 million. The film can also be appreciated from the comfort of the home on HBO-Max. It is hard to say if films such as this Warner Bro’s sci-fi epic are actually profiting or not from its simultaneous release in cinemas and online streaming platforms.
James Bond on the other hand did not have to face such a dilemma as No Time To Die continues its run exclusively in theaters and has reached a new threshold this weekend. Coming in fourth place with $4.6 million the Queen’s favorite secret agent reached a glorious $700 million when combining domestic and international ticket sales. An emphatic ending to Daniel Craig’s Bond saga.
Kenneth Branagh’s touching and autobiographical film Belfast has collected a modest $1.8 million in the US over the weekend. This independent production has a high probability of being a strong contender come award season in 2022.
