Eli Roth is officially in place to direct his adaptation of the famous 2K first-person shooter Borderlands for Lionsgate, with production set to commence sometime this year according to Deadline. The premise of Borderlands takes place in the distant future, in which a squadron of “Vault Hunters” journey to the planet of Pandora seeking a mysterious alien vault. This vault is speculated to hold blueprints and instructions to advanced alien technology, but the squadron soon find themselves in a crossfire between local wildlife and bandit population. Their efforts prevent a privatized army from discovering the vault first.
Since 2K and Gearbox Software released the first Borderlands in 2009, the game has sold approximately 57 million units globally, with its successor Borderlands 2 sell 2ing2 million units. Another installment, Borderlands 3, was released last September and accumulated over 8 million units globally.
Ari Arad will producing Borderlands through his Arad Productions banner alongside Erik Feig, who will assist the production with his banner Picturestart. Arad will be heading the film and supervising through its development, while the screenplay will be drafted by Emmy-winning screenwriter Craig Mazin. Lionsgate has been trying to adapt Borderlands into a feature film since 2015. Randy Pitchford will serve as an executive producer on the film, while James Myers is overseeing the film for Lionsgate.
