Ed Asner, one of the most celebrated performers in television history, has passed at the age of 91. Winner of seven Emmy Awards, 5 of which were for his portrayal of Lou Grant in The Mary Tyler Moore Show, he has received the most awards out of any male performer in the history of American television.
He also received five Golden Globe awards as well as being the recipient of the Screen Actors Guild Life Achievement Award in his lifetime.
“We are sorry to say that our beloved patriarch passed away this morning peacefully,” his family said in a statement, as they state that he passed away on Sunday morning. “Words cannot express the sadness we feel. With a kiss on your head — Goodnight dad. We love you.”
Outside of his illustrious television career, Asner was a renowned voice actor, known for roles such as J. Jonah Jamieson in the 90s animated version of Spider-Man, as Hoggish Greedley in Captain Planet and the Planeteers, and as Ed Wuncler in The Boondocks. Asner is currently in a plethora of projects in various stages of production and has accumulated over 400 credits throughout his career.
His most beloved performance, not just as a voice actor but overall artist, came in 2009 when he voiced Carl Fredricksen in the Oscar-winning Pixar film Up.
