‘Dune’ Director Denis Villeneuve Confirms He Doesn’t Want To Make Any More ‘Dune’ Movies Past A Trilogy

With Dune: Part Two rapidly approaching its release date, Denis Villeneuve confirmed that he wants to make one more film based on the second Dune book to round off a trilogy but doesn’t want to tackle any other books. Within the main story of the Dune series, there are six books.

The first Dune followed Paul Atreides as his family became the head of Arrakis, a hotspot for spice smuggling. But everything they work for is jeopardized when the Atreides get caught up in a plan by the Harkonnens, a rival family, looking to overthrow them for control of Arrakis.

Conceived by Paul Herbert in 1965, the first Dune and its subsequent sequels gained a large following over the years, with director Villeneuve a part of that following. As Hollywood Reporter points out, Villeneuve’s passion for the story he told and is still telling has spanned over his own life, but he has a stepping-off point in mind when it comes to adapting the story, saying Dune Messiah should be the last Dune movie for me.”

He went on to tell Empire Magazine that his goal is to find success in making a film trilogy off of Dune and its first sequel, Dune Messiah. “Dune Messiah was written in reaction to the fact that people perceived Paul Atreides as a hero, which is not what [Herbert] wanted to do. My adaptation [of Dune] is closer to his idea that it’s actually a warning.”

Dune: Part Two hits the big screen on March 1st.
