A bit of an online back-and-forth occurred the other day after a report surfaced over the possibility of appearance from Deadpool in the upcoming Wolverine standalone picture Logan. On Wednesday, The Wrap reported – from an unnamed source – that Ryan Reynolds (the star of the titular anarchic Marvel comic adaptation that bolted through the cinematic gates in early 2016) filmed scene with Deadpool 2 director David Leitch (John Wick) potentially set as an end-credits coda to the upcoming Logan.
What transpired was vehement denials, via Twitter, from Logan director James Mangold (who previously directed The Wolverine) as well as seconded denials from Reynolds and Logan star Hugh Jackman. Mangold struck by claiming The Wrap was reporting fake news.
Reynolds’ “Prisoner 24601” comment references Jackman’s Oscar-nominated and Golden Globe winning performance in the 2012 musical Les Misérables.
While this may be settled, Logan hits theaters on March 3rd and focuses on a older, more grizzled Wolverine attempting to protect a female clone from a shadowy organization. Patrick Stewart reprises his Professor X role in the feature, the last, reportedly, to feature Jackman in his iconic X-Men role. Boyd Holbrook (Gone Girl), Doris Morgado (2 Guns), Stephen Merchant (I Give It a Year), Elizabeth Rodriguez (Orange is the New Black), Richard E. Grant (Jackie) and newcomer Dafne Keen co-star. Michael Green, Scott Frank and James Mangold wrote the screenplay based on a story from Mangold and David James Kelly. The second installment of Deadpool, meanwhile, is expected to hit theaters on March 2, 2018.
Reynolds and Jackman did, briefly, share the screen as their superhero counterparts in 2009’s X-Men Orgins: Wolverine.
