Ever since Disney first announced that it would be making a live action remake of their animated classic Mulan, there have been issues of controversy. These range from Disney fans being upset that the character of Mushu would not be a dragon to concern over how the songs from the original movie will be used in this more realistic version.
But now the live action Mulan has reached a very controversial status overseas, and this time the controversy is not fan-related but rather a political problem. Apparently the controversy arose when actress Liu Yifei, who is playing Mulan, expressed support for Hong Kong’s police on the social media site Weibo, which is the Chinese equivalent to Twitter. Since Liu Yifei now has American citizenship, her comments were seen as tasteless by the people living in Hong Kong, with hundreds of thousands of citizens currently protesting and fighting for their democracy in the streets and rain.
According to sources in the Korean Times, people are now protesting the movie using the hashtag #BoycottMulan on Twitter. The hashtag may have been originated by people in Hong Kong but now it is being used other countries including South Korea. It’s currently unknown whether #BoycottMulan will affect Disney’s profits, so at this point we will just have to wait and see what happens.
