The Directors Guild of America is the latest industry entity to announce their awards nominees of the 2013 calendar year. Alfonso Cuaron (Gravity), Paul Greengrass (Captain Phillips), and Steve McQueen (12 Years A Slave) all pulled in their first career DGA nominations, while David O. Russell (American Hustle) scored his second and Martin Scorsese (The Wolf of Wall Street) received his eleventh career DGA nod.
In a list full of movies sporting very particular stylistic choices it’s hard to point to any particular film outside the chosen nominees as a snub, but both Spike Jonze (Her) and J.C. Chandor (All is Lost) feel notably omitted. The Coen Brothers (Inside Llewyn Davis) must also be considered a somewhat unlikely omission, although most of the awards consideration so far this season has focused either on lead actor Oscar Isaac or the movie as a whole, with the Coens receiving more accolades for their writing than their directing.
Of the entire list, it’s Greengrass’s inclusion that, while it may well be merited, seems the most head scratching. Captain Phillips seems to have recovered from some initially middling reviews to build a head of steam going into this awards season, but most of the criticism the movie has faced has been in regard to Greengrass’s directorial choices and his unflinching commitment to the documentary style that can be seen in his other work, such as United 93, The Bourne Supremacy, and The Bourne Ultimatum.
The DGA will announce its winner Saturday, January 25 in a ceremony hosted by Jane Lynch.
