According to The Hollywood Reporter, Joe Johnston, the director of October Sky, The Rocketeer, Jumanji, and Captain America: The First Avenger among others, is currently in talks to direct an alien invasion movie called Extinction. If he takes the position, he will join writer Spencer Cohen and producers David Hoberman and Todd Lieberman. Production will covered by Good Universe, company started in 2012 with a film catalog that includes only Last Vegas and Spike Lee’s Oldboy remake.
Details about the plot are scarce. THR knows that Extinction will follow a man struggling to keep his family safe from an alien invasion while simultaneously attempting to unravel what is going on. We can recognize that rough outline as the plot to War of the Worlds and at least a dozen other alien invasion movies, so expect juicier details as Extinction gets further into production. Johnston’s involvement would certainly bode well for Extinction as he has plenty of experience directing action movies. His films tend to remain popular with audiences over time despite silly premises or predictable stories as The Rocketeer and Jumanji attest to.
No release date has been announced. Johnston’s most recent directing effort, Not Safe For Work, will be available through Video On-Demand sometime in the not-too-distant-future (no specific date has been announced yet).
