Director Alfonso Gomez-Rejon is departing his follow-up project- the drama Collateral Beauty starring Will Smith– due to alleged creative differences. This news comes shortly after the film was acquired by New Line Cinema. Collateral Beauty stars Smith (Concussion) as a New York ad man who is blown with a sudden personal tragedy. The screenplay is credited to Allan Loeb (Rock of Ages, Just Go With It).
The exit of Gomez-Rejon isn’t the first setback for the feature. The film initially was set to star Oscar nominated actors and Pan co-stars Hugh Jackman and Rooney Mara; both of whom have since dropped out the project. Jackman dropped out allegedly due to scheduling conflicts, while it unkown why Mara backed out.
Gomez-Rejon recently directed the Sundance prize winner Me and Earl and the Dying Girl and is former Emmy nominee for directing the FX anthology smash American Horror Story. He is currently attached to direct The Current War, a historical drama starring Jake Gyllenhaal (Southpaw) and Benedict Cumberbatch (Black Mass). It’s unclear in what direction Collateral Beauty will head in or who is likely to succeed Gomez-Rejon behind the camera, however Smith is still attached as possibly actor Jason Segel (The End of the Tour).
