‘Digger’ Set To Be One Of The Biggest Box Office Bombs Of All Time

Digger is set to be one of the biggest box office bombs of all time. To date, the climate change satire starring Tom Cruise has grossed only about $23 million worldwide. And in a recent report by TheWrap, the film is set to lose Warner Brothers, which recently finalized its merger with Paramount Skydance, over $250 million.

According to TheWrap, which spoke to multiple insiders at Skydance (the new name for the two merged studios), “Skydance executives were shocked to learn the extent of the loss of the Warner Bros. movie directed by Alejandro G. Iñárritu when the company was handed over this week.” The report also said that although the film was previously reported to cost around $125 to $150 million, its final production budget is about $173 million. The film also had an additional marketing budget of $100 million, attributed to Tom Cruise’s global press tour.

Insiders at Warner Bros also told TheWrap they expect Digger to make only around $40 million worldwide by the end of its theatrical run. Which is where the film’s estimated loss of $250 million comes in. That total would put the film at the top of the list of biggest box-office bombs in box-office history. Unadjusted for inflation, it would put the film above huge box-office bombs like Disney’s John Carter and Marvel Studios’ The Marvels. Adjusted for inflation, the total is still less than John Carter, whose inflated loss is approximately $280 million.

For audiences who still want to see the film for themselves despite its major underperformance, Digger is still playing in theaters nationwide.
