‘Detective Chinatown 3’ to Get Limited Released for Chinese New Year

Warner Brothers has decided to ring in the Year of the Rat by releasing Detective Chinatown 3 in theaters across North America. For those unfamiliar with the Detective Chinatown franchise, they are buddy comedy mystery movies originating from mainland China. The first Detective Chinatown came out back in 2015 while its sequel Detective Chinatown 2 was released in 2018, with both movies proving to be huge box office successes.

Now, according to the Hollywood Reporter, Warner Brothers has acquired the third movie’s North American distribution rights, and the studio is planning on giving Detective Chinatown 3 a limited release in 150 different theaters throughout the United States and Canada. This is supposed to be one of the widest release of any Mandarin film, and Variety reports that the movie will have subtitles in either Chinese or English. As mentioned earlier, the movie will be released the weekend of Chinese New Year, which starts on Friday, January 24th.

Detective Chinatown 3  was written and directed by Chen Sicheng, who also wrote and directed the previous two films. Stars Baoqiang Wang and Haoran Liu will be reprising their respective roles as lead detectives Tang Ren and Qin Feng. The plot of Detective Chinatown 3 will follow the two detectives as they travel to Tokyo in order to solve a case and engage in hilarious hijinks.
