The highly anticipated new sci-fi epic, Dune, has been delayed until October 1, 2021. The Warner Bros. film, directed by Denis Villeneuve, was originally set to come out December 18, 2020.
Dune is yet another film in a growing list of films that have been pushed back to next year. The delay was expected by some after the studio pushed Wonder Woman 1984 back from its original release date of October 2, to December 25.
Just recently, the new James Bond film No Time to Die pushed its release back to April 2, 2021. Matt Reeves’ The Batman was also recently delayed to October 1, 2021, the same date that Dune is now meant to release.
Recent news about Cineworld indicates that theaters have been struggling financially during the pandemic, and the delay of more major films could mean even more financial issues. In recent statement, another major theater operator, Cinemark, announced that they have no plans to close U.S. venues.
“Cinemark’s reopening plan was designed with multiple contingencies in place to ensure we are able to be nimble and react as needed to this ever-changing environment,” the company said in a statement. “We do not currently have plans to close our U.S. theatres and are continuing to align with demand, including reducing operating hours and days while we await new studio content to encourage theatrical moviegoing.”
Dune is based on Frank Herbert’s 1965 novel and stars Call Me by Your Name’s Timothée Chalamet alongside Euphoria star Zendaya. Rebecca Ferguson, Oscar Isaac, and Josh Brolin will also play major roles in the film.
