DC FANDOME ‘Aquaman 2’ Interview with Director James Wan and Patrick Wilson

Another event held during the digital DC FANDOME first-annual event featured quick interview between James Wan, director of the first Aquaman film and its upcoming successor Aquaman 2, and cast member Patrick Wilson, who played King Orm/Ocean Master in Aquaman and will reprise his role in the sequel. Aquaman 2 is the “fifth” film the duo has collaborated on.

Wan gave insight into the initial decision to cast Wilson for Aquaman, saying how he tried to write Ocean Master specifically for Wilson and the dynamic that would be presented between he and Aquaman himself, Jason Momoa.

Wan and Wilson also detailed the physical taxation and sometimes awkward aspects of filming for the Aquaman movies, noting that they especially had difficulty with working in large harnesses and on green-screens. Wilson compared it to working in a blackbox theater, “using nothing but your imagination,” while Wan said that “nothing (filmed) in the underwater world was easy.” That being said, he also remarked how he’s “learnt a lot and knows what to do in the next one,” potentially alluding to yet another Aquamna sequel.

As for the new film, Wan said that the film will “be a little bit more serious, a little bit more relevant in the world that we’re living in today,” and that he’s excited to “treat them (audiences) to a visual film they’re not familiar with.”

Aquaman 2 is set to be released on December 16, 2022.
