Competition Fought Off As ‘Civil War’ Remains At The Top Of The Box Office With $11 Million Domestically

Moving into its second week of circulation, Civil War stays at the top of the box office this weekend. However, newcomers to the scene are giving the film a run for its money.

By the end of the weekend, Civil War, the newest feature from Alex Garland, is on track to make about $11 million. Civil War follows a group of journalists documenting a war within the United States, as they race against time to uncover the truth. The film stars Kirsten Dunst, Wagner Moura, Nick Offerman, and Cailee Spaeny.

Come the close of the weekend, the film is expected to cross $44 million at the box office. Within its second weekend, it almost matches its $50 million budget. The price tag marks the highest of any A24 film thus far.

Coming into second place is Abigail, taking home roughly $10 million in its first weekend, giving it a good start to match its $28 million budget. As the Hollywood Reporter points out, the final total for Abigail’s first weekend was estimated to be bigger, but there is still room to change.

Taking home the bronze is the duo of the king of the monsters and the king of Skull Island, Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire. After being out for roughly a month, the film adds about $9.2 million to its total in its fourth week. The total domestic gross is on track to hit about $170 million, beating out Kong: Skull Island’s domestic gross, but still coming under 2014’s Godzilla.

The top five for the weekend are rounded out with Guy Ritchie’s new film, Ministry Of Ungentlemanly Warfare, with $8.7 million, and Spy X Family Code: White, finishing the weekend with $4.8 million.
