Director Christopher Nolan has a new film on the way and it’s set to hit theaters on July 21, 2017. Warner Bros. holds worldwide rights to the project, however that’s all the information that anyone knows at this stage. Still, a new film on the horizon from the director of The Dark Knight trilogy marks a major movie announcement nonetheless.
Nolan is one of the definitive filmmakers of modern cinema and therefore even the thought of a new project will make waves in Hollywood. Throughout his career, Nolan continues to maintain a firm hold of his pictures and is one of the few filmmakers who can keep a shred of secrecy in our all consuming digital era. On that end, early details regarding plot or casting are unsurprisingly unknown at this point.
That sense of secrecy has became a major facet of the director’s work. Most recently, Nolan released the sci-fi puzzler Interstellar, film that was firmly kept under wraps until a short time before its release last November. While Interstellar garnered mixed reaction from critics and fans, the film brought together many reoccurring themes in Nolan’s overall process- his preference for shooting on film, his use of practical effects versus CGI and resistance to 3-D (the film won the Best Visual Effects Oscar this past year). In moving forward, that may remain consistent on his upcoming film. Nolan also directed the recent documentary short Quay and holds producing credit on the upcoming Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice.
Nolan shot to fame and earned notice from Hollywood after his 2001 noir breakthrough Memento– a film that eventually earned the director his first Oscar nomination for Best Original Screenplay. Since then, Nolan has worked consistently within the studio system offering stylish, uncompromising big budget filmmaking with Insomnia (2002), The Prestige (2006) and Inception (2010)- the latter earned Nolan Oscar nods for writing and producing. Of course, it was Nolan’s work on The Dark Trilogy (2005-2012) that earned the London-born filmmaker the sort of clout that few modern filmmakers are allowed.
Outside of The Prestige and Interstellar, all of Nolan’s post-Memento movies have been distributed by Warner Bros. We will stay tuned to the latest on this evolving story…for now, Nolan’s next picture is set to open on July 21, 2017 and that’s all we know..
