Christopher Nolan Clarifies Why He Didn’t Use CGI In ‘Oppenheimer’

The film, Oppenheimer is directed by award-winning filmmaker Christopher Nolan as he’s back after, 2020 Tenet. Nolan expressed that when he directed Tenet he used CGI in the film, but when shooting Oppenheimer he wanted to use CGI visual effects as rarely as possible. Within the modern film industry, this method of less CGI is uncommon, due to the benefits CGI has for visual effects that are cheaper, safer, and in some cases more realistic.

Oppenheimer is a thriller about a man (Oppenheimer) who endangers the world and order to save it. The film is a biopic of the nuclear scientist J. Robert Oppenheimer. The cast for this film is huge, with familiar faces of Cillian Murphy as J. Robert Oppenheimer, Emily Blunt as his wife, Matt Damon as General Leslie Groves Jr, Robert Downey Jr as Lewis Strauss, Florence Pugh as Jean Tatlock, Benny Safdie as Edward Teller, Michael Angarano as Robert Serber and Josh Hartnett s Ernest Lawrence, with many more.

The film is based on the Pulitzer Prize-winning book, American Prometheus: The Triumph and Tragedy of J. Robert Oppenheimer. Empire got insight from Nolan as he talked about the creation of Oppenheimer.

But there is something very unique and particular about being out in a desert in the middle of the night with a big cast, and really just doing some enormous explosions and capturing that. You couldn’t help but come back to this moment when they were doing this on the ultimate scale, that in the back of their minds they knew there was this possibility that they would set fire to the atmosphere. It was pretty amazing to engage in that kind of tension.

Oppenheimer will hit theaters on July 21, 2023.
