Check Out the Trailer for Martin Scorsese’s ‘Silence’

A month ahead of it scheduled theatrical bow comes the first trailer for Martin Scorsese‘s eagerly anticipated latest film Silence. And with it completes the remaining cinematic mystery of 2016 as the film is likely the last movie of the year yet to have had formal screening or have even the tiniest morsel of reactions to seep out. Of course, a filmmaker of Scorsese’s stature can get away with that – and he did nearly the same thing three years ago with his latest film, the Oscar-nominated smash The Wolf of Wall Street.

However, Silence may be a bit of a tougher sell. The film stars Andrew Garfield (99 Homes) and Adam Driver (Star Wars: The Force Awakens) as Portuguese Jesuit priests who in the seventeenth century visit travel to feudal Japan in search of missionary gone missing (played by Liam Neeson). The duo must battle both violence and persecution in an attempt to find their mentor as well as propagate Christianity but also must contend with the fear that their mentor may have lost his faith. Silence is based on the novel by Shûsaku Endô and comes from a screenplay credited to Jay Cocks (Gangs of New York) and Scorsese himself.

Check out the first trailer below. Silence hits theaters on December 23rd, beginning in limited release before expanding wider in January.
