Elizabeth Banks is now set to direct and star in her own original project idea Invisible Woman. The current draft was written by Erin Cressida Wilson, who wrote the screenplay for the 2016 Emily Blunt-led film The Girl on the Train.
This comes after the commercial failure of Banks’ Charlie’s Angels reboot, which she directed and produced with Max Handelman through Brownstone Productions, the company that produced the Pitch Perfect films. Charlie’s Angels made around $8 million domestically on opening weekend and has since made around $43 million internationally according to Box Office Mojo. Unfortunately that doesn’t even cover the projected production budget of $48 million, making the film a flop.
Invisible Woman will follow the Elizabeth Moss-led and Leigh Whannell-directed Invisible Man that recently finished production. According to Deadline, Banks will be the invisible victim in her flick whereas Moss will be playing someone whose abusive husband who she fears is invisible. Invisible Man is based on a franchise starting in 1933 of a film that was inspired by a book by H. G. Wells of the same name. Invisible Man will be out February 28, 2020.
It seems as though Universal is confident that Invisible Man will do well enough that it warrants a sequel before box office numbers come in. This is definitely a stark contrast from the failed franchise Invisible Man was meant to accompany: the Universal horror Dark Universe. Hopefully this means they expect it to be good, but will it match up to the caliber of Jordan Peele and Ari Aster’s revamps of the horror genre?
