Channing Tatum (Foxcatcher) and Joseph Gordon-Levitt (Looper) are potentially looking to team up for an original musical comedy currently in development at Universal (who have experienced recent success in the genre with the Pitch Perfect franchise). Mark Platt, a producer of hugely successful Broadway musical Wicked, has stepped aboard and will produce along with Tatum’s Free Association banner and Gordon-Levitt’s hitRECord Films.
The pitch came from an idea that sprang from Gordon-Levitt, and the R-rated musical looks to follow two pilots on a misadventure. Michael Bacall (21 Jump Street, Scott Pilgrim vs. the World) will write the screenplay. Tatum and Gordon-Levitt has graced screens together twice before in the 2005 drama Havoc and the 2008 Iraq war drama Stop-Loss. The duo were rumored to potentially team up for a remake of the classic musical Guys & Dolls, but that film (set up at Fox) hasn’t quite taken shape as of yet.
Both actors have never shied away from showing off their song and dance skills. Tatum has previously appeared in the dance film Step Up and helped shape the Magic Mike franchise; he can currently be seen crooning and tapping along with the comedy Hail, Caesar! where the actor appears as a Gene Kelly-like old-Hollywood song and dance man. Likewise, Gordon-Levitt memorably showcases his skills with a fan-favorite dance sequence in his 2009 romantic comedy (500) Days of Summer. Gordon-Levitt is also trying to develop a film adaptation of the 1980s musical puppet series Fraggle Rock.
No start date has been announced as of yet. Tatum can now be seen on screen in Hail, Caesar! and has a small role in Quentin Tarantino’s The Hateful Eight. Tatum will next grace theaters in the comic-book adaptation Gambit and is expected to reunite with Jonah Hill on third 21 Jump Street film. Gordon-Levitt, who recently appeared in The Walk and The Night Before, will next be seen in the biopic Snowden for director Oliver Stone.
