Celine Song revealed that working on her film Past Lives has led her to “fall in love with filmmaking,” she revealed to the Hollywood Reporter at the 57th Karlovy Vary International Film Festival.
The film stars Greta Lee as a South Korean immigrant to Canada and then New York City, mirroring Song in real life. The movie also features Teo Yoo as Hae Sung and John Magaro as Arthur.
The movie is based on Song’s real life as a Korean immigrant and how she navigated relationships and being a writer in a new country.
When asked how she achieved the awkwardness between the two male leads on camera, she answered, “I kept the two male actors apart in the preparation of the movie until we shot that scene where the two of them see each other for the first time. That required a little bit of logistics, but the two guys were apart.”
Although Song used to work in the theater industry, she seems to be in film to stay. “Theater may have become a past life,” she said in the interview. “I just fell so hard in love with filmmaking. I just feel I discovered myself. It was a revelation to me that I am a filmmaker, and I enjoy it so much.”
The film opened in the United States on June 2nd to critical acclaim and Celine Song won the award for Best Screenplay and Greta Lee for Best Actress at the Hollywood Critics Association Midseason Film Awards.
