The cast behind the upcoming remake of The Toxic Avenger appeared at SDCC this Thursday to celebrate the film’s wide release, along with the ‘goopy goodness’ that has defined the odious superhero’s legacy. Director Macon Blair, along with Peter Dinklage, who plays janitor-turned-vigilante Winston Gooze made an appearance. Also in attendance were Elijah Wood, Taylour Paige, and Jacob Tremblay, who all fill supporting roles within the film, and series creator Lloyd Kaufman.
The actors used the panel as an opportunity to unpack their personal connections to the Toxic Avenger (nicknamed “Toxie” by fans). “What appealed to me about a mop-wielding supermutant?” Dinklage joked. “Probably the idea of playing a mop-wielding supermutant.”
While the film screened in 2023 at certain film festivals to high praise, it remained unclear for a time whether or not Toxie would ever see a theatrical release due to the movie’s graphic violence and gross-out content — The Toxic Avenger is completely unrelated. Thankfully, Cineverse has picked up the film for a wide release on August 29th of this year.
As a special treat, SDCC audiences received a sneak peek of the intrepid Avenger’s much-awaited transformation scene, in which a near-death Gooze endures a technicolor assault on his mind and body before finally emerging as the mutant fans know and love.
