The trailer for Brad Bird’s (Incredibles) Ray Gunn was released by Netflix today. The movie is set to star Sam Rockwell (Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri) as Ray Gunn, recording artist Tom Waits as Eyera and Scarlett Johansson as Venus Nova. The trailer begins with Ray Gunn arriving at a crime scene as a coroner takes a body away. Eyera gives him a monologue about light and dark as it cuts to different characters in the film. More shots of Ray are shown driving through a retro futuristic city with flying cars. the plot is set up after as it shows a man come to Ray and Eyera to investigate Venus Nova for murder.
The movie has been 30 years into the making, but studios shelved it. In an interview with Esquire, Bird stated, “For me, it was an unscratched itch. There was something about animation doing film noir but also having more comedy in it and more action. I always thought it was weird that people were resistant. I thought, Really? How is this not good popcorn stuff?”
The animated crime noir is being released in Netflix on December 18th and select theaters on December 4th under Skydance animation. The animated feature delves into subjects that are not in family friendly movies according to Bird. “Quite honestly, I don’t think about kids at all. Too much animation thinks exclusively about kids to the point where [filmmakers] would not see the movie that they’re making for someone else. That, to me, seems incredibly patronizing. You better be in the audience that you’re making it for, or everything you do will be insincere,” he admitted.
