Jean Smart Joins The Sequel To Holiday Movie, ‘The Family Stone’

Jean Smart (Hacks) joins the cast of the The Families Stone, a sequel to The Family Stone. Details of her character have not been announced according to Deadline. The first film starred Dermot Mulroney (My Best Friend’s Wedding) as Everett Stone as he brings his girlfriend Meredith, portrayed by Sarah Jessica Parker (Sex in The City), to join his family for Christmas. Everett plans to marry her and use the the wedding that has been passed down but finds trouble getting the families approval of Meredith. According to Deadline, the sequel takes place 20 years after Diane Keaton’s character (Annie Hall), Sybil Stone, passed away from a illness revealed in the first movie.

Many of the first cast is returning including Rachel McAdams (Mean Girls), Craig T. Nelson (Poltergeist), Claire Danes (Romeo + Juliet), Luke Wilson (Old School), Parker, Mulroney, Tyrone Giordano (The Next Three Days), Elizabeth Reaser (Twilight) and Paul Schneider (Lars and The Real Girl). The plot of the sequel centers around the Nelson’s character Kelly Stone, bringing a women home to introduce to his family. The movie comes just after a year of Keaton’s actual death in October. A death that many actors made statements about including Nelson in People’s magazine, who stated, “I cannot express my sadness over hearing of Diane Keaton’s passing. I enjoyed so much working with her on The Family Stone, Book Club and Book Club: The Next Chapter. Being in the presence of her brilliance, wonderful smile and laughter is something I will always remember. She was always engaging and always full of surprises in what she brought to her roles.”
