According to Deadline, Ben Affleck and Oscar Isaac have signed on to star in J.C. Chandor’s upcoming film, currently referred to as “the project formerly known as Triple Frontier.” Pre-production is currently underway at Netflix with script from Chandor, adapted from the original by Mark Boal.
Deadline dubbed the project The Movie That Refused to Die, which seems appropriate given the recent history behind the action thriller. Originally held by Paramount, whose chairman and CEO Brad Grey was big voice in favor of the film, it was soon let go after his departure, along with exits from Channing Tatum and Tom Hardy, both scheduled at one point to have roles. Scott Stuber, head of Original Films at Netflix, saw the potential for the movie, dedicating himself to bringing to screens. Amidst the good news, Affleck left to focus on his health. However, his departure wasn’t permanent and he’s now back for good, thanks to his efforts towards recovery.
The original title, Triple Frontier, is in reference to the border zone between Argentina, Brazil, and Paraguay, which at the time was well-known as a hotspot for organized crime. This version of the script originated in the 2000’s and since then the region has tamed down, prompting Chandor to adapt the script (and title) for relevance. New locations for shooting now include Columbia, Oahu, and California. They are scheduled to begin rolling the cameras out on March 26th.
The Movie That Refused to Die has long attracted big talent including Kathryn Bigelow to direct. Amidst the large amount of prospective names tossed out for key roles included Will Smith, Tom Hanks, and Mahershala Ali. Those obviously didn’t work out, but the future now looks promising. Adria Arjona (Pacific Rim Uprising), Charlie Hunnam (Sons of Anarchy), Garrett Hedlund (Mudbound), and Pedro Pascal (Narcos) are set to join Affleck and Isaac.
