‘Belfast’: Kenneth Branagh Receives Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay, First Win for 8-Time Nominee

Tonight, Kenneth Branagh won his first Oscar win in Best Original Screenplay for Belfast. Branagh was nominated 8 times for an Academy Award for his work as an actor, director, producer and screenwriter. His previous nominations were in the categories of Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actor, Best Supporting Actor, Best Adapted Screenplay, Best Original Screenplay, and Best Live Action Short Film.

Belfast is inspired by the real-life events of Branagh’s life living in Northern Ireland. The film’s synopsis is as follows: “A semi-autobiographical film which chronicles the life of a working class family and their young son’s childhood during the tumult of the late 1960s in the Northern Ireland capital.”
