‘Avatar: The Last Airbender’ Animated Film In The Works From New Studio

It’s hard to deny how much mainstream recognition that Nickelodeon has gotten for their revolutionary series Avatar: The Last Airbender. The show has paved the way for more animated projects on Televisions to take more risks with their storytelling by being geared just as much to older audiences as they are to kids.

The series was even followed by a sequel show, Legend of Korra in 2012 that was also met positive reception despite not as critically acclaimed as the original series. Some were hopeful that in the near future we would still get a future project dealing with the Four Nations, and luckily  the fans will get their rest. As Nickelodeon is working on New Avatar set to be a theatrical release.

The film will be developed by a brand new studio known as Avatar Studios. This studio was created by Avatar series creators Michael DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko, as a way to bring new films and original content regarding the world of the Air, Water, Earth and Fire nations. They will be reporting back to Nickelodeon Animation President Ramsey Naito, to bring content to both theaters and for Paramount’s upcoming foray into the streaming service with Paramount Plus. Production for the new Animated Project will begin later this year, with no set release date for the film at this time.

This is very reassuring because there was some recent news regarding the upcoming Netflix Avatar series that disappointed many fans. As the creators of the original show Bryan and Mike, left due to creative differences, giving fans less hope for this new live action adaptation.

Fortunately, Nickelodeon is still giving them an opportunity to have some creative control taking on projects as ambitious as a movie. Brian Robbins, President of Viacom CBS Kids and Family stated,  “Creator-driven stories and characters have long been the hallmarks of Nickelodeon, and Avatar Studios is a way to give Mike and Bryan the resources and runway to open up their imaginations even more and dive deeper into the action and mythology of Avatar as we simultaneously expand upon that world and the world of content available on Paramount+ and Nickelodeon”.

Ryan Pineda: When it comes to film, animation, video games and other mediums, I can discuss for hours about how much on why certain films and animated media made me the person I am today. I adore the artistic merit that comes from a lot of pop-culture media and will definitely love to have a conversation about favorite movies any day! I have graduated in 2017 with a BA in Film and Television at the University of Arizona. Been passionate about writing about films due to always having an interesting outlook on the medium. Will always see a film and will definitely be sure to recommend it to someone that I know for a fact would love that movie. Not only that but will also give reasons for why I think that film did or did not work as a movie, and the same can go for other pieces of media like television, video games and especially animated projects.
