‘Argylle’ Wins The Super Bowl Weekend Box Office With $6.6 Million Domestically

While TV screens are amping up for the Super Bowl tomorrow night, movie theaters are seeing another slow weekend. Despite the slow business and a significant drop-off, Argylle is still able to stay on top.

After last weekend saw it take the gold but still underperform, Argylle continues this trend into its second week, making just $6.6 million, while still staying on top. The Bryce Dallas Howard-led feature, sporting a $200 million budget, is staring down a 62% drop off this weekend.

As ComicBook.com points out, the less-than-stellar reviews have been doing the film no favors in terms of its earnings. Currently, the film sits at a 32% Critic Score on Rotten Tomatoes, a 6.0 on IMDb, and sports a CinemaScore of a C+.

Coming up in second place is Lisa Frankenstein, directed by the late Robin Williams’ daughter, Zelda Williams. With a screenplay by Diablo Cody, and starring Kathryn Newton and Cole Sprouse, the film follows a young girl who decides that instead of finding the ideal boyfriend, she can just make one.

Taking in just $1.7 million on its first day, the film is on track to score itself just $4 million in its debut weekend. Although an underwhelming opening, the film was made off of just $13 million, leaving it an easier path to making a profit.

The bronze for the weekend goes to The Beekeeper, still holding out in the top three after 5 weeks. It’s looking to add $3.4 million this weekend, brining it’s domestic total to $54.4 million

As Variety notes, the weekend of the Super Bowl is one that tends to be quiet, with no title breaking $10 million as sports fans prepare for the 49ers taking on the Chiefs.

The top five is filled in with Wonka at fourth, making $3.1 million, and Migration at fifth, with $3 million.
