Antoine Fuqua Signs First-Look Deal With Netflix

Antoine Fuqua, the director behind titles such as Olympus Has Fallen, The Equalizer, Southpaw, The Magnificent Seven, Infinite, and his latest film, The Guilty, has a partnership with Netflix.

According to Variety, Fuqua has signed a first-look deal with Netflix, continuing his collaboration with the studio following the success of his thriller The Guilty, starring Jake Gyllenhaal. The new agreement with Netflix will focus on feature and documentary films. Fuqua will carry out the arrangement as both a director and a producer through his newly renamed production company, Hill District Media.

“Working with Netflix on The Guilty was such a rewarding experience, both from an artistic and collaborative point of view,” Fuqua told Variety. “I’m beyond excited to continue this relationship and expand our slate of films with a partner that shares our vision at Hill District Media.”

“Antoine is an impactful storyteller who believes art can create meaningful change in the world,” said Tendo Nagenda, VP Netflix Film. “We had a great collaboration with him on The Guilty and look forward to telling many more stories together in the future.”

Fuqua is currently in the midst of filming the action thriller Emancipation that follows a runaway slave who forges through Louisiana’s marshes on a perilous trek to escape plantation owners that nearly murdered him. The film stars Mustafa Shakir and Will Smith. Fuqua is also directing untitled docuseries following the history of the Los Angeles Lakers.
