Anna Kendrick has been tapped to helm Netflix’s highly anticipated feature adaptation of The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo. Anna Kendrick previously worked with Netflix on her 2024 directorial debut Woman of the Hour, which she also starred in and received critical acclaim for.
The studio confirmed today that Kendrick would direct the adaptation of Taylor Jenkins Reid’s 2017 bestselling novel. The novel centers around an iconic Hollywood actress turned recluse as she recruits journalist Monique Grant. The goal is to interview her and publish a tell-all that includes an intimate look into the Scarlet’s seven marriages and the secrets that she has carried with her through her extensive career.
Little Fires Everywhere showrunner and writer Liz Tigelaar is set to pen the script, with revisions to be made by Francesa Sloane. Reid will executive produce alongside Margaret Chernin. Circle of Confusion’s Brad Mendelsohn and 3Dot Productions’ Liza Chasin are set to produce. As for casting, there have been no public confirmations from Netflix or Kendrick, but fans of the book have been choosing who they would like to play the novel’s title character since a film adaptation was announced.
The fan’s most notable frontrunners to portray ambitious, fiery Evelyn Hugo have been Eiza González and Ana de Armas. So notable, in fact, that both actresses have been asked about the casting and whether they would take the role, with González and de Armas responding in the affirmative.
De Armas stated during an interview with Entertainment Tonight said,
I think one of the things I love about acting and my career is to be able to do everything. You have to try all the things you can. You can’t just always eat the same thing.
González said that it would “be such an honor” if she got to play Evelyn, explaining further during an interview on E! News,
I love the writer. We followed each other, and she would send me all her new books ahead of time, which I was such a fan of. I love [Jenkins-Reid], she’s so talented. I don’t know if I’ll ever get it. It’d be such an honor. And I don’t even know what’s happening with that project. I love the book. I love all her stuff. I’m a huge fan.
Netflix is sure to have their hands full dealing with fan input as they make their way into production, so stay tuned with us at MXDWN for any updates.
