There’s more Oscar hope for Alfonso Cuaron’s Roma as the film ended up topping the 24th Annual Critics Choice Awards. The film won the categories of Best Picture, Director, Foreign Film and Cinematography. This will gain a huge Oscar boost for the Netflix film as Roma has been taking home not only these awards from the Critic Choice, but won in some major categories for other shows including the Golden Globes.

Roma was not the only winner of the night as many other films got some major wins at the Award Ceremony. Christian Bale won for Best Actor for his performance as Dick Cheney in Vice, while both Lady Gaga and Glenn Close were tied as Best Actresses for their critically acclaimed performances in A Star is Born and The Wife. Also, both Mahershala Ali and Regina King Won Best Supporting Actor and Actress for their roles in Green Book and If Beale Street Could Talk. Ironically enough, The Favourite, which had the most nominations for the Critics Choice only won two awards, which were Best Ensemble Cast and Best Actress in a Comedy with Olivia Coleman

In regard to other major winners, mainstream films have also gotten some popularity at the Critics Choice. A Quiet Place won for Best Sci-fi/Horror Feature, Mission Impossible Fallout won for Best Action Film, Crazy Rich Asians won for Best Comedy and Spider-Man Into the Spider-Verse won Best Animated Feature. While not huge players in the Oscar race, this could make their chances of getting some Oscar nominations bigger than they were once before.

Ryan Pineda: When it comes to film, animation, video games and other mediums, I can discuss for hours about how much on why certain films and animated media made me the person I am today. I adore the artistic merit that comes from a lot of pop-culture media and will definitely love to have a conversation about favorite movies any day! I have graduated in 2017 with a BA in Film and Television at the University of Arizona. Been passionate about writing about films due to always having an interesting outlook on the medium. Will always see a film and will definitely be sure to recommend it to someone that I know for a fact would love that movie. Not only that but will also give reasons for why I think that film did or did not work as a movie, and the same can go for other pieces of media like television, video games and especially animated projects.
