Fresh off of the Sundance circuit with his two films The Overnight and Sleeping With Other People, Adam Scott (perhaps best known for his role on NBC’s Parks and Recreation) has signed up to star in the new horror comedy Krampus, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
The upcoming movie, also starring Toni Collette (The Way Way Back, Enough Said), will be a twisted horror/dark comedy about the ancient pagan demon Krampus, who appears around Christmas according to German legend; in contrast to St. Nicholas, who rewards the well-behaved, this horned demon’s solely responsible for punishing the wicked.
Director Michael Dougherty (Trick’R’Treat), who was the screenwriter for X-Men 2 (2003) as well as Superman Returns (2006), is thrilled to add some “morbid yuletide fun” to the holiday season, saying in a Deadline exclusive:
The dark ancient origins of our holidays have always fascinated me. Christmas has been invading Halloween for far too long. It’s time to return the favor.
Dougherty co-wrote Krampus with Todd Casey and Zach Shields, morphing both elements of true horror (Shields has writing credits on films such as The Conjuring and The Stairs) and cheeky humor (Casey has written for several comic book TV series, like Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and Thundercats, along with the comedy series Chinese Guys) in order to create the hybrid horror.
Scott’s comedy roots dig deep, from small appearances in Knocked Up, to bigger hits like Step Brothers; the actor has also never shied away from silly crowd-pleasers like Piranha 3D and Hot Tub Time Machine. Eventually he began landing more complex comedic roles in projects like Friends With Kids (2011) with Kristen Wiig and Jon Hamm, and The Secret Life of Walter Mitty (2013) opposite Ben Stiller.
Comedian David Koechner (Anchorman) has also joined the production, with co-stars Allison Tolman (FX’s Fargo) and seasoned child actor Emjay Anthony (It’s Complicated, Chef) signed on as well. According to The Wrap, Scott and Koechnaer will play two fathers whose children are abducted by the demonic Krampus.
Quite appropriately, the upcoming flick is due in theaters December 2015 – just in time for the holiday spirit.
