Aaron Taylor-Johnson Appears In First Look Photo At 13th Century Period Piece ‘Werwulf’

Aaron-Taylor Johnson in 'Werwulf'

Esquire has shared an exclusive first-look photo from the production of Werwulf, Robert Eggers’ upcoming 13th-century horror film. The photo features actor Aaron Taylor-Johnson in character alongside a trio of hunting dogs. Johnson’s character is seen holding a spear in period-accurate dress, standing in a dense forest, seemingly on the hunt for what we can only speculate as the titular creature.

Werwulf follows Eggers’ streak of gothic-horror pictures. Most recently was his 2024 adaptation of Nosferatu, which starred Johnson alongside Lily-Rose Depp, Willem Dafoe, and Ralph Ineson, all of which are slated to appear in the upcoming Werwulf. Eggers is known for his dark and violent, historically accurate period pieces. Other credits of his include The Northman (2022), The Lighthouse (2019), and The Witch (2015).

Werwulf will release in theaters Christmas Day this year. Robert Eggers had previously described the project as the “darkest” thing he’s ever written.
