In 2020, Neill Blomkamp began work with on his next feature-length project: a secret horror film called Demonic. Now, we’re finally getting a peek at the new film thanks to IFC Midnight releasing a short Behind-the-scenes video shot on an 8mm camera to the IFC Films YouTube channel.
The film stars Carly Pope, Chris William Martin and Michael Rogers. The plot synopsis reads, “A young woman unleashes terrifying demons when supernatural forces at the root of a decades old rift between mother and daughter are ruthlessly revealed in this horror thriller from director Neill Blomkamp.”
Blomkamp’s style and creativity has captured audiences since his feature-length directorial debut District 9 released in 2009. Since then, the director made the Matt Damon-led action sci-fi film Elysium in 2013 followed up by Chappie in 2015. While those films didn’t see the same success that Blomkamp’s first feature-length project did, fans have been wanting to see more of the director’s work, especially after rumors surfaced about his involvement in a sequel to the 1987 Robocop film, and a new Alien sequel that was eventually cancelled.
While the new project may be a change of pace from the science-fiction that Blomkamp’s fans are used to with his feature-length work, the director isn’t a stranger to the horror genre. In 2017, he released a 22-minute horror short called Zygote which starred Dakota Fanning.
Demonic is set to release in theaters August 20, 2021, and will be available on demand and digitally August 27.
