The Weinstein Company has acquired the U.S. distribution rights to the Nazi thriller HHhH starring Mia Wasikowska (Crimson Peak), Rosamund Pike (Gone Girl), Jack O’Connell (Unbroken), Jason Clarke (Terminator Genisys), and Jack Reynor (Macbeth), according to Variety.
HHhH stands for Himmlers Hirn heisst Heydrich, or Himmler’s brain is called Heydrich. The film is based on a novel by Laurent Binet and follows Jozef Gabcik and Jan Kubis as they escape Nazi-occupied Czechoslovakia only to be sent to assassinate Nazi officer Reinhard Heydrich (Clarke). Heydrich eventually founded the “Final Solution” plan that defined the organization. Pike plays Heydrich’s wife who introduced him to the Nazi ideology. Cedric Jimenez (The Connection) is directing the film.
Pike, O’Connell, Clarke, Reynor and Wasikowska all joined the project last May. The acquisition by The Weinstein Company points to an awards push for the film when it releases next year. This year the company will release the Bradley Cooper-starrer Burnt, the transgender-drama About Ray and the latest from Todd Haynes (Far From Heaven), Carol. All releases are currently vying for awards buzz.
HHhH started shooting this September in Budapest. We’ll have more on the film as it develops.
