Michael, the Michael Jackson biopic, has officially surpassed Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer to become the highest-grossing biopic of all time. Michael has officially made $977 million worldwide, surpassing Oppenheimer’s $975 million global total. Previously, Michael had outgrossed Bohemian Rhapsody’s $911 million global total in 2018, making Michael the highest-grossing musical biopic of all time.
Michael has made $607.2 million and $370.2 million since its release in late April. During its opening weekend, the film shattered box-office records, becoming the highest box office debut for a musical biopic, grossing $217 million globally, $157 million more than the previous record holder, 2015’s Straight Outta Compton, which grossed $60 million globally in its opening weekend. The film has also become Lionsgate’s highest-grossing film, surpassing 2013’s The Hunger Games: Catching Fire, which, unadjusted for inflation, made $865 million worldwide.
Lionsgate is said to be working on a second Michael Jackson biopic, following the latter parts of Jackson’s life not depicted in this year’s film. Though this second Michael Jackson biopic has yet to be greenlit by Lionsgate.
Michael is still currently playing in theaters. Additionally, the film is currently available to rent or own on multiple digital streaming platforms, including Prime Video, Apple TV, and Fandango at Home. A physical release on 4K UHD and Blu-Ray is slated for July 14th from Lionsgate Home Entertainment.
