Zachary Levi Says Zack Snyder Fans And Marketing Are To Blame For ‘Shazam 2’ Flop

Shazam! Fury of the Gods has been making headlines for all the wrong reasons since the movie premiered and now Zachary Levi, the star of the film, has something to say about it. On Twitter, Levi suggested that fans of Zack Snyder wanted the film to fail as revenge on Warner Bros. for dropping Snyder’s DC Universe.

The film opened to $30 million at the domestic box office, compared to the original Shazam! which earned $53 million in 2019. With a budget of over $210 million to produce and market, the studio is looking at a major financial loss. Aside from audiences, it wasn’t a favorite of critics either, with 53% currently on Rotten Tomatoes.

Director David F. Sandberg said in a thread on Twitter that he was surprised by all the negative reactions but has no regrets about making the film. “I wasn’t expecting a repeat of the first movie critically, but I was still a little surprised because I think it’s a good film,” he said. Despite that, Sandberg says he’s taking a break from superhero movies.

Levi’s costar, Rachel Zegler, also took to Twitter to defend the movie against the critics. “It’s just cool to hate on fun nowadays. That’s okay. We’re good.” She said.

Responding to a fan’s tweet, Levi also said that marketing was to blame for the movie’s failure.
